Fabric GSM & Weight Calculator

Convert a weighed fabric sample into grams per square metre and estimate roll weight from length, usable width and GSM.

Calculate online

Enter your production values to calculate an operational estimate.

  • Fabric sample weight in grams
  • Sample area in square centimetres
  • Roll length and usable width for weight estimation

Calculation method

Calculate fabric GSM from sample weight and area, or estimate fabric roll weight using length, width and GSM.

Method: GSM = sample weight in grams ÷ sample area in square metres

Worked example: GSM cutter sample and roll weight

A 100 cm² fabric sample weighs 1.8 g and the roll is 100 m long by 180 cm wide.

  1. Convert 100 cm² to 0.01 m², then divide 1.8 g by 0.01 m² to get 180 GSM.
  2. Calculate roll area as 100 m × 1.8 m = 180 m².
  3. Multiply 180 m² by 180 g/m² and divide by 1,000 to estimate 32.4 kg.

Use a conditioned, representative sample and the usable fabric width for purchasing decisions.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate GSM with a 100 cm² cutter?

A 100 cm² sample is 0.01 m², so multiply the sample weight in grams by 100.

Why can actual roll weight differ?

Moisture, finish, usable width, edge waste and GSM variation can make the physical roll weight differ from the estimate.

Why can measured GSM vary across a roll?

Moisture, finishing, tension and construction variation can change sample weight. Test several points across the width and length before accepting a roll.
