- Fabric consumption in kilograms per piece
- Fabric price per kilogram
- Trims, processing, CM, overhead and packaging cost
- Target margin and order quantity
Calculation method
Calculate garment cost per piece from fabric consumption, fabric price, trims, processing, CM, overhead, packaging and margin.
Method: Selling price = (fabric + trims + processing + CM + overhead + packaging) ÷ (1 − margin %)
Worked example: basic t-shirt at 5000 pieces
A Tiruppur factory quotes a 180 GSM single-jersey t-shirt. Use production consumption and approved rates to check margin before issuing the cost sheet.
- Fabric: 0.25 kg/pc × ₹480/kg = ₹120.00
- Trims + processing (printing + washing): ₹15 + ₹25 = ₹40.00
- CM + overhead + packing: ₹35 + ₹10 + ₹5 = ₹50.00
- Total cost = ₹210.00. At 18% margin, selling price = 210 ÷ 0.82 = ₹256.10/pc. For 5000 pcs, order value = ₹12,80,500.
Change any input — fabric price, CM or margin — to see how a ₹5 shift in fabric rate changes order profit by ₹25,000 on this quantity.
Frequently asked questions
What should a garment cost sheet include?
A practical garment cost sheet includes fabric consumption and price, trims, printing or embroidery, washing or other processing, cut-and-make cost, overhead, packaging, testing, freight and the target margin.
Is margin the same as markup?
No. Margin is profit divided by selling price, while markup is profit divided by cost. This calculator uses margin.
How do I estimate fabric cost per garment?
Multiply approved consumption in kg by the landed fabric price per kg. Include shrinkage and cutting allowance in consumption, not as a separate add-on, to avoid double counting.
What is CM and how do Tiruppur factories estimate it?
Cut-and-make (CM) covers cutting, stitching, checking and packing labour. Estimate it from SAM × operator rate ÷ efficiency, or use the factory's historical CM per style and add an allowance for overtime when the line runs below target efficiency.
Why does order quantity change cost per piece?
Fixed costs like development, patterns, testing and documentation are absorbed across more pieces. Use the MOQ calculator to see where price must rise for small orders.
