Sewing Thread Consumption Calculator

Estimate thread required for a garment order using total seam length and a thread-to-seam ratio. Use actual stitch-class ratios or sewing-room history for commercial planning.

  • Total seam length per garment
  • Thread-to-seam ratio
  • Wastage, order quantity and cone length

Calculation method

Estimate sewing thread metres per garment, total order consumption and cones required from seam length, stitch ratio and wastage.

Method: thread per garment = seam length × thread-to-seam ratio × (1 + wastage %)

Worked example: thread for 1000 garments

A garment has 500 cm of seams, a 4:1 thread ratio, 10% wastage and uses 5000 m cones.

  1. Convert 500 cm to 5 m and multiply by the 4:1 ratio to get 20 m per garment.
  2. Add 10% wastage to get 22 m per garment, or 22,000 m for 1,000 garments.
  3. Divide by 5,000 m per cone and round up to plan 5 cones.

Frequently asked questions

What is the thread-to-seam ratio?

It is the metres of sewing thread consumed per metre of seam. The value changes by stitch class, stitch density, thread tension and material thickness.

Why include thread wastage?

Cone changes, machine threading, seam starts and ends, repairs and floor loss create consumption beyond the theoretical stitch requirement.

How should the thread-to-seam ratio be selected?

Use a ratio appropriate to the stitch class, seam construction and machine setup. Validate it with a sample garment when purchasing accuracy matters.
