  • English cotton count (Ne)
  • Twist multiplier

Calculation method

Calculate yarn twists per inch (TPI) and twists per metre (TPM) from English cotton count and twist multiplier.

Method: TPI = twist multiplier × √Ne; TPM = TPI × 39.3701

Worked example: 30 Ne yarn at a 4.0 multiplier

Estimate twist for a 30 Ne yarn using a twist multiplier of 4.0.

  1. Take the square root of 30, which is about 5.477.
  2. Multiply 5.477 by 4.0 to get about 21.91 TPI.
  3. Multiply TPI by 39.3701 to get about 862.7 TPM.

Frequently asked questions

What is yarn twist multiplier?

Twist multiplier relates yarn count to twist. The suitable value depends on fibre, yarn use, spinning system and required strength or handle.

Does this formula apply to every yarn system?

This calculator uses English cotton count (Ne). Other count systems should be converted to Ne before using the cotton twist multiplier formula.

Does the calculated TPI replace a twist test?

No. It is a specification estimate. Confirm actual yarn twist with the applicable laboratory test method and buyer requirement.
