  • Loom RPM and picks per inch
  • Expected loom efficiency
  • Number of looms and shift duration
  • Fabric width and GSM

Calculation method

Estimate loom production in metres and kilograms from loom RPM, picks per inch, efficiency, looms, shift hours, width and GSM.

Method: metres per hour = loom RPM × 60 × efficiency ÷ (PPI × 39.3701)

Worked example: ten looms on an eight-hour shift

Estimate output for 10 looms running at 600 RPM, 60 PPI and 85% efficiency for eight hours.

  1. Theoretical output is 600 × 60 ÷ (60 × 39.3701), or about 15.24 m per loom-hour.
  2. At 85% efficiency, actual output is about 12.95 m per loom-hour.
  3. Across 10 looms for eight hours, estimated production is about 1,036 m.

Actual output also depends on stops, style changes, warp breaks and loom condition.

Frequently asked questions

Why is actual loom production lower than theoretical production?

Stops for warp and weft breaks, style changes, maintenance, operator response and quality issues reduce actual efficiency.

How is production converted from metres to kilograms?

Multiply produced metres by fabric width in metres and GSM, then divide by 1,000.

Should efficiency include planned style changes?

Yes. Use an efficiency assumption that reflects expected stops, maintenance, beam changes and style-change time for the period being planned.
