  • Yarn count value
  • Source count system: Ne, Nm, Tex or Denier

Calculation method

Convert yarn count instantly between English cotton count (Ne), metric count (Nm), Tex and Denier.

Method: Tex = 590.541 ÷ Ne = 1,000 ÷ Nm; Denier = Tex × 9

Worked example: convert 30 Ne cotton yarn

Convert a 30 Ne yarn into Tex, Nm and Denier for a specification comparison.

  1. Divide 590.541 by 30 Ne to get about 19.685 Tex.
  2. Divide 1,000 by 19.685 Tex to get about 50.8 Nm.
  3. Multiply 19.685 Tex by 9 to get about 177.2 Denier.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between Ne and Tex?

Ne is an indirect count, so a higher number means finer yarn. Tex is a direct count, so a higher number means coarser yarn.

What does Nm mean?

Nm is the number of 1,000-metre lengths per kilogram of yarn. It is an indirect yarn count system.

Which yarn count systems are direct and indirect?

Tex and Denier are direct systems, so a larger number means a heavier yarn. Ne and Nm are indirect systems, so a larger number means a finer yarn.
