  • Fixed order cost
  • Variable cost and selling price per piece
  • Target order profit

Calculation method

Calculate break-even quantity and a profit-based garment MOQ from fixed order costs, variable cost, selling price and target profit.

Method: target MOQ = (fixed order cost + target profit) ÷ (selling price − variable cost per piece)

Worked example: MOQ for a target order profit

Fixed order cost is ₹50,000, variable cost is ₹350 per piece, selling price is ₹450 and target profit is ₹100,000.

  1. Contribution is ₹450 − ₹350 = ₹100 per piece.
  2. Break-even quantity is ₹50,000 ÷ ₹100 = 500 pieces.
  3. Target MOQ is (₹50,000 + ₹100,000) ÷ ₹100 = 1,500 pieces.

Frequently asked questions

Which fixed costs belong in an export-order MOQ?

Include costs that do not materially change with quantity, such as development, patterns, samples, testing, setup, documentation and minimum processing charges.

What if selling price is below variable cost?

The order cannot break even through volume because every additional piece loses money. Revise the price, specification or variable cost before quoting.

What if selling price is below variable cost?

There is no feasible break-even quantity because every additional piece increases the loss. Reprice the order or reduce variable cost first.
